DATA CULTURE MUGS

MEET THE MUGS THAT START THE DATA CONVERSATION

Spark conversations about data in your meetings with the simple lifting of your new data culture mug!

  • Low Friction
People can engage or not, the data conversation is not being forced upon them.
  • Ice Breaking
Starting the conversation can be the hard part, you have a view on the value of data but need the conversation starter!
  • It's Not Me Saying It, It's The Mug
Sometimes having a prop helps, the attention is not on you, but you still want to get the data message across.

THERE'S TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY (OR MUG)

Just like the chart cards in our award winning Dashboard Wireframe Kit, there's also two sides to our mugs. It depends on who you are talking to, so you have two types of messages to decide to show when you drink from your mug. Drink right-handed and show a more gentle message. Drink left-handed and stoke some controversy.

Front Side

A Gentle Message

Not everyone responds well to a provocative message about the value of data. It needs to be light.

Back Side

A Spirited Message

Sometimes we need to shake the tree a bit and invoke some data controversy into the discourse.

EVOLVE YOUR DATA CULTURE, ONE MEETING AT A TIME

Not all of us are able to implement a comprehensive organizational change management program to make data part of every decision. Not all of us are able to get our executive leadership to buy-in to leveraging data for behavioral change. For those of us that have to take the grassroots approach to maturing your data culture, this mug is for you.

The path to progressing your organizations data culture can start with a simple conversation. With a mug you raise during a meeting, you can open the door to having a conversation about data with your meeting participants. And hopefully, in some small way, start raising awareness about leveraging data in your organization and build momentum to making your business data driven.

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY ABOUT CHANGING CULTURE

During my career as a Big 4 Senior Manager analytics consultant few things had greater impact on me than a meeting I attended at a global fortune 100 enterprise. The cultural impact of which I have been trying to replicate for years.

There were about 15 people in the meeting and, to my surprise, the head of the meeting started sharing a "safety story". He related how, on the weekend, his daughter's child seat was not properly secured to the car anchors.

They were in a rush and had no time but he paused himself and decided it was more important to be safe and be late than be on time but take an unacceptable risk with his daughters' safety.

Everyone else shared similar personal safety stories, before the meeting started in earnest. I later found out that every single meeting in this organization, whether in corporate or in production, had to start with personal safety stories.

Within three years of doing this, workplace deaths reached zero. Which, for this type of industry, was unheard of. It was a simple idea, and certainly not the only change process that was implemented for that goal, but it had the single biggest impact on the culture of the organization. It was so profound that I started to think how we could apply this to data.

Now, the best way to change the data culture of an organization is to take a similar approach. Secure leadership buy-in and implement an organizational change program to shift the culture of data. That's the ideal! Well, most of us are not able to do that but I still wanted to find a way we could make our own small little impact, on a per meeting basis. And that's where the mugs come it.
